For the last 20 years or so I have been fascinated by the connection between leadership and culture within a business.  I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with, and be taught by, some of the most amazing and inspirational leaders from both Australia and overseas.   I have also been fortunate to have been able to implement my own take on what I’ve learnt from others, along with my learnings from my own triumphs and mistakes, into my own business.  So, I thought I’d take this opportunity to show you why Elaine and I are so passionate about leadership and culture and how these two topics are literally “everything” to do with running a great business.

Owning and running a real estate business puts you at the head of many different personality types.  From sales agents with big or sensitive egos to administrators who are extremely detail oriented and don’t like the fuss of the spotlight, to property managers who are very task orientated.  The diversity of personalities is extreme, and everyone has their place.   The challenge is getting all the different personalities to work harmoniously together and respect each other for who they are and what they offer.

This, I can assure you, is not an easy task and, in our experience, when running our business, a lot of thought went into how we handled situations and what message our decisions had on the business.  I guess that’s the key right there – the link between leadership and culture is that everything a leader does and says influences how people feel about the business, how they feel about you and their team members and how they feel they can and should behave - this my friend, is the culture connection with leadership.

A leader's actions, values, and behaviours set the tone for the entire organisation. For instance, if a leader promotes transparency, open communication, and ethical practices, it is more likely that these principles will be reflected in the company's culture.  On the other hand, if there are lots of secret deals going on and nothing is particularly well communicated to the team and the leader/owner of the business is not client orientated, then this is likely to be the culture of the team.

There are anywhere up to 12 different leadership styles which are commonly discussed amongst specialists in this area.  Most leaders have 2-3 styles they are dominant in – I believe that the best leaders are the ones who can get the best out of their team and have a fantastic, positive business culture that are extremely adaptable between the different leadership styles.  In other words, they will draw on different styles depending upon the situation.  The image in this blog shows 6 of the main styles which I will discuss in more detail in next week's Blog.

There is so much more to this topic and it is something we cover a lot more in depth in our 8 Week Leadership and Culture Bootcamp which has been created to empower female business owners and leaders to become strong, adaptable and effective leaders.  Our focus is to help women create profitable businesses they can be proud of and that they and their team love working in.
